Module Description

This module aims to:

  1. Give students an understanding of the complex definition of terrorism
  2. Examine the historical background of the subject
  3. Identify and critically assess the ideology behind terrorism
  4. Enable students to consider and critically evaluate the consequences to the state of terrorist activity
  5. Raise awareness of the possible counter‐terrorism measures available to governments and critically evaluate the same
  6. Consider and critically assess the links between terrorism and crime

  • Articulate the main definitions of terrorism
  • Give an explanation of the use of terrorism as a weapon against the state
  • Recognise the key ideological issues that motivate terrorists
  • Understand and critically assess the link between terrorism and crime
  • Appreciate the social, political and economic consequences of terrorism
  • Identify and critically evaluate classic counter‐terrorism strategies
