Level 5: Risk Assessment & Management
Introduction
Introduce the concept of risk and applies this to understanding the wider implications of risk assessment on the criminal justice system. This will include offender management with an emphasis on sexual and violent offenders, multi-agency protection panels and will consider whether punishment should ‘fit the crime’.
Module Description
This module aims to:
- Make students aware of the key definitions of risk
- Introduce students to a number of specific areas influenced by the concept of risk
- Ensure that students understand the wider implications of risk assessment on the criminal justice system
- Enable students to consider the implications of risk to specific fields within the CJ system
- Identify and critically evaluate the principle assessment tools used to identify risk
- Raise awareness of the growing problems caused by a risk‐averse society
