Level 1: Legal Framework
Module Description
This module aims to:
- Outline the structure of the legal system in England and Wales
- Explain and evaluate the key differences between the criminal and civil legal processes
in England and Wales
- Identify the differences between statute and common law
- Ensure students understand the roles of those agencies which form part of the criminal
justice system and can recognise and evaluate how they complement each other
- Make students aware of how the criminal justice system protects the individual

Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, with primary reference to England and Wales, students
will be able to:
- Understand how legislation is created
- Identify and evaluate the key differences between civil and criminal courts
- Understand the roles of those key to maintaining the integrity of the judicial process
- Recognise how central government holds the agencies which comprise the criminal
justice system to account and the consequences of such accountability
- Recognise some shortcomings within the criminal justice system and identify and
evaluate possible ways of addressing the same
