Level 1: Crime and the Impact of Crime

Module Description

This module aims to:

  1. Make students aware of criminal liability and the key definitions associated with criminality
  2. Introduce students to a number of specific crimes and to several key defences to a criminal offence
  3. Ensure that students understand the impact of drugs and anti‐social behaviour upon criminal behaviour
  4. Enable students to understand the social and economic effects of criminal behaviour upon communities and the state
  5. Identify and evaluate the impact of scientific and technological developments within the criminal justice arena
  6. Raise awareness of the growing internationalisation of crime

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Understand what a crime is and recognise the scale of criminality
  • Identify and evaluate the key elements of several specific crimes and several key defences
  • Recognise the key issues associated with substance misuse and anti‐social behaviour
  • Appreciate the social and economic consequences of crime on communities, business and the state
  • Recognise and evaluate the key issues involved in any relaxation of the current law relating to prostitution
  • Understand the impact of the increasing internationalisation of crime
