Level 1: Crime and the Impact of Crime

Introduction

Develop knowledge of criminal liability and the key definitions associated with criminality. Examine some of those key areas of criminal and anti-social behaviour which have a major impact on the community. Consider the impact of substance misuse, the ‘internalisation’ of crime and defences to criminal behaviour.

Module Description

This module aims to:

  1. Make students aware of criminal liability and the key definitions associated with criminality
  2. Introduce students to a number of specific crimes and to several key defences to a criminal offence
  3. Ensure that students understand the impact of drugs and anti‐social behaviour upon criminal behaviour
  4. Enable students to understand the social and economic effects of criminal behaviour upon communities and the state
  5. Identify and evaluate the impact of scientific and technological developments within the criminal justice arena
  6. Raise awareness of the growing internationalisation of crime
