Level 1: Crime and the Impact of Crime
Module Description
This module aims to:
- Make students aware of criminal liability and the key definitions associated with
criminality
- Introduce students to a number of specific crimes and to several key defences to a
criminal offence
- Ensure that students understand the impact of drugs and anti‐social behaviour upon
criminal behaviour
- Enable students to understand the social and economic effects of criminal behaviour
upon communities and the state
- Identify and evaluate the impact of scientific and technological developments within
the criminal justice arena
- Raise awareness of the growing internationalisation of crime

Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Understand what a crime is and recognise the scale of criminality
- Identify and evaluate the key elements of several specific crimes and several key
defences
- Recognise the key issues associated with substance misuse and anti‐social behaviour
- Appreciate the social and economic consequences of crime on communities, business
and the state
- Recognise and evaluate the key issues involved in any relaxation of the current law
relating to prostitution
- Understand the impact of the increasing internationalisation of crime
