About Accredited Prior Learning

Introduction
APL is a process which enables students to gain recognition, formal credit and exemptions for learning acquired prior to enrolling on a KOL course.

When applying for a Kaplan Open Learning course you can gain credits (resulting in exemptions) by applying for Accreditation of Prior Certified Learning (AP(C)L). Credit is a national educational currency which provides a means of quantifying learning achieved at a given level of study.

Certificated learning can be obtained from study at another Higher Education Institution, distance learning, in-house company training or professional or vocational qualifications (NB: you cannot claim AP(C)L for training where only attendance was required).

Kaplan Open Learning will award credit and exemptions based on a comparison of the learning outcomes of your previous studies and the relevant learning outcomes on the Kaplan Open Learning programme of your choice.

What are Learning Outcomes?
Further and Higher Education institutions use learning outcomes to identify whether students have demonstrated the minimum level of learning required to pass study at different levels. The levels of learning outcomes in the UK are set by the National Qualifications Framework.

Benefits of APL
If you are awarded credit for prior learning, you may complete your course sooner by not repeating learning you already have gained. By reflecting on what you have already learned, you may realise how much you have accomplished by prior learning.

APL also reduces the cost of your degree. We charge up to £100 for each module accredited for prior learning rather than the full course fee which is currently £255.
