Position Summary

The Study Skills Manager is a cross programme role supporting the Programme Leaders in the development and deployment of study skills support to students.

 

Primary Functions (90% of work load)

  • To work to promote and improve retention of students who are academically underprepared
    • Provide on-line tutorials and individual instruction on the Access to Online Learning and Preparatory English and Writing modules and across all programmes for underprepared students and provide support for tutors working with students requiring additional support.
    • Track the progress of AOL and EAP students analysing progress and reporting on this to the Programme Leaders and Senior Academic Management team.
    • Establish a process for referral of current students identified in need of supplemental instruction.
    • Complete mid module reports identifying students at risk of failing, to include prescribed support. Organise and run group and individual support workshops as needed.
    • Maintain the Student Support Tracker.
  • To improve, develop and monitor the support provision for the learning and accommodation of disabled students.
    • Provide academic support and accommodation for students identified with specific learning needs through 1:1 and group tutorials as warranted.
    • Provide support/information to tutors who are working with students with specific learning needs.
    • Evaluate tools that may be implemented to facilitate the learning and accommodate students with specific learning needs such as dyslexia.
  • Mark the essay portion of the Academic Readiness Assessment (ARA) and make pre-sessional placement decisions about Preparatory English and writing (PEW) and Access to Online Learning (AOL) suitability in cooperation with the Director of Admissions.
  • Process/ administer student appeals/complaints in cooperation liaising with Programme Leaders.
  • Handle administration of academic offences cases according to university policy.
    • Communicate information about all cases to the appropriate Programme Leader, including updates about outcomes.
    • Organise and run preliminary Adobe session meetings with students, when warranted, (in conjunction with the Programme Leader) to ascertain student understanding of referencing issues.
    • the Programme Leaders about all details related to academic offences in preparation for presentation to the Academic Offences Committee and attend all Academic Offences Committee hearings.
    • Maintain the Academic Offences Tracker.
    • Advise module tutors of outcomes of AOC hearings and plagiarism referrals, including set penalties for resubmission/marks and advise tutors of those students requiring extra vigilance with regards to referencing oversight in their upcoming modules.
    • Oversee the closure of the academic offence investigation and proactively foster future compliance by coordinating the provision of a student Turnitin account, conducting a training session for the student on the use of Turnitin and interpretation of reports and reviewing the student’s resubmission or subsequent piece of work for adherence to referencing conventions.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for tutors and Student Support for queries about students.
  • Organise and Coordinate resubmission support for students who have failed liaising with Student Support and Programme Leaders.
    • Produce the detailed timetable of support/draft submission deadlines for each student
    • Provide writing support on resubmission drafts for students through script annotation.
  • Facilitate delivery of success tools and resources for all incoming students.
    • Maintain STAR for current students (grammar, writing for academic purposes and plagiarism exercises).
  • Deputising for Programme Leaders, and covering for other members of the Academic Team in their absence as required and within reason.

  • Prior experience
    • • A first degree (a second degree is desirable) in English or a related subject area.
    • • Experience of teaching or administration in a higher education environment is essential.
    • • Experience of higher education teaching in an online environment is desirable.
